Outdoor Play in the Cold
This morning I woke up to the harbor starting to freeze. It dropped to 2 degrees last night here! Since I try to get out on a walk every day, I am concerned about my little one being too cold in her stroller. I recalled seeing in the January 2012 Parents magazine a quick one page breakdown of windchill that I thought I would share.
Here is what the print version article said:
Windchill 32º F and up
Verdict Safe to play.
Safety Tip Dress your child in layers, with a hat and mittens. Babies and young toddlers develop hypothermia faster than older children, so bundle them in one more layer than you would wear.
Windchill 13º to 31º F
Verdict Be cautious.
Safety Tip It's okay for your kids to be out, but watch for signs that they are too cold, such as shivering or fatigue, and have them take indoor breaks every 20 to 30 minutes to warm up. Her body temp will drop much faster if she gets wet, so swap soggy gloves and hats for dry ones.
Windchill Below 13º F
Verdict Unsafe for outdoor play.
Safety Tip Keep her inside today. As the windchill factor approaches 0º F, there is a serious risk of frostbite.
Wikihow also has a post on How to Know the Temperature is Safe to Play Outside.
We might be waiting until the afternoon for our walk. How handy is this quick guide from Parents magazine? I love it!
